About this painting
Vesper explores the idea of symbiosis in nature, intervals of time, and the power of remaining unruffled. One day I found myself watching deer being tended to by birds over and over. It felt soothing to witness such an idyllic example of symbiosis. Especially the completely unfazed deer, as jackdaws roamed freely around its head and body, removing loose fur and insects. This is also the first time I’ve explored the idea of time lapsing within the painting itself—the movement of the doe’s expressive ears as well as traces of the jackdaw’s fluctuating position. The title, Vesper, refers to that time of day when the late afternoon light transitions from golden to violet, just before evening. My favorite time of day.
