I go through a similar work flow when I start each new portrait. Here’s a step-by-step photo tour of that process over a few weeks, using Nicholas’ portrait as an example…


Constructing the canvas by hand


Applying a bright color for the underpainting

I usually paint from dark to light, so the darker areas go in first
